Antlers and Outings

- Finished this up today, with the intention of using it as part of my cover sheet for the portfolio...which i haven't even gotten started with. Hopefully all of tomorrow will be dedicated to that, and hopefully i will learn how to use Illustrator at the same time. Mike had mentioned after seeing my last freelance gig, that i might be loosing my style....Which is a concern i have a lot. I tried to mix my old work with my new work for this....i don't know how well it came off at all.

I went out last night and hung out with good buddy Anchovy and a few other guys...it was my first time in 6 months really being out of the house without Rachel around, hopefully this will become a much more regular event. It was a good time, and it was especially nice to actually "work" outside of my studio.

In the mean time i am on a mad hunt for decent figure drawing classes in St Louis. If there is anything I miss from school, its figure drawing classes. I have some decent leads, but nothing is looking too promising.

Got a call from Corey Wade from Sandbox Strategies last night. I haven't talked to the guy in over a year, and it was nice to hear from him. He had some pretty exciting things to let me in on, and i am now really looking forward to this job....It will be a nice break from drawing mopes. I did a lot of odd and end stuff with Corey a while back...a good chunk of it buried deep within my memories...but apparently this game is being considered the best wireless game of 2006. I did the majority of the "promo" art for the game....it was a few months of conjuring up megaman fanart from 6th grade, and learning the ins and outs of gradients. That job was also what really motivated me to get a Tablet.

The lines here are more contemporary, less academic than articulating every single facet of the bones. Something that stands on its own like this drawing needs to be entirely about confidence, and if you feel the need to describe every ounce of detail, just take a photograph, you know? If you're going to stylize it, stylize it. I find this to be a nice, refreshing approach (the colors are fine).

Some of the lines in the drawing itself are hard for an organic thing like antlers, which seems less like something I would expect to see in one of your drawings than in one of mine (which I would be frustrated with, and consider a mistake). This is just evidence of the approach being more "whimsical," which is up to you to decide if you want or not. What gets me, though, is that it's completely non-whimsical at the same time, because those are the type of lines I would expect when working on watercolor paper, where you're playing it safe with the lines just to make sure you close up the areas of color properly. With all that said, this isn't anything like your old-old work (more visceral), or your old-new work (clean to a fault), but rather something different, which is at least worth trying, isn't it? From here on, push that self-assured element. You're on the right track with this, and you just need to trust yourself. What you don't need is some (well, whatever) telling you that you're 'losing your style.' If you drew it, it's your style.

And the 'sleeping pills' drawing isn't going to knock anybody out, but you finished the thing in a day and it's a drawing of sleeping pills. I'm not going to harp on your sources (one in particular) of critical advice, but why don't you head on over to Wal-Mart and hold it up in front of the fish tanks? At least there's a better chance that one of them has actually picked up a pencil at one time or another.
